THE STORY OF HOW RSM BEGAN
God began to plant seeds for Reflective Shield Ministries long before I realized it. In 2008 I began training in TaeKwonDo at True Balance Martial Arts hoping to learn self-defense. Since then, I have tested for and received my first and second degree black belt and volunteer as an assistant instructor helping students. In 2009 I started to intensely study the Bible at Emmaus Bible College, discovered that God had gifted me as a teacher, and graduated in 2013 with a degree in Bible and Youth Ministry. During my time at Emmaus my name was given to Kyle Palmer, the owner of Team Rock Ministries. To make a long story short, the summer after I graduated from college I traveled as part of that ministry as a martial arts performer and ministry team member. To say the least, that served as my introduction to putting martial arts and ministry together, but more than that served as the stepping stone to my next ministry experience with martial arts. In early 2014, because Kyle recommended me to her in place of Team Rock, I was contacted by Jeannie Coros, the children’s ministry director of Harvest Bible Chapel Barrie in Canada, who requested that I come and be a part of their week-long kids camp and teach kids martial arts and Bible! I excitedly agreed and thanked God for such an amazing opportunity! In July of 2014 I traveled, with a fellow believer and martial artist for support, to be a part of Harvest's kids camp. It was AWESOME! After a rough start to the week due to illness, the local church prayed for me and the rest of the week was a great time to share about Jesus with the kids! That week I got to invest ten hours into seventeen kids teaching them about martial arts and the armor of God. When Jeannie asked me if I would come back the next year I promised her right away that I would. In 2015, I had more opportunity for martial arts ministry. The children’s ministry directors at Grace Church, Mary Kay Mezak and Jennifer Bell gave me the opportunity to work with some of their kids! As they were being taught about how our treasure reveals our heart, I was challenging them that while bodily training is of some value, training in godliness is of infinite value and sharing Jesus with them! To overflow 2015 in blessings God really provided for the trip to Harvest in 2015, we went with all of our expenses covered by generous donations from members of Lakeside Bible Chapel and I led a team of five people. We got to share ten to twelve hours with two groups of kids, in the morning we had a group of twenty-one and in the afternoon we had a group of twenty-five kids aged five to twelve. As I realized how much the ministry was valued, and how much my heart beat to reflect God to the world in this way I began to desire to build it into something more. That is what began in me the desire to form Reflective Shield Ministries. My hope for this ministry is simply to share the gospel. Through teaching of the word of God and instruction in martial arts and self-defense I hope God will work through this ministry to build many platforms to reach people with the good news. Ultimately, my hope is that through my whole life God may be glorified through the talents and abilities that He has given me. Through this ministry, I hope I can challenge other believers to use the talents they have to point back to the greatness of God.
